Tours fill up fast in Alaska, and that’s especially true for some popular ones like helicopter excursions that land on a glacier. It’s important to book as far in advance as you can to ensure your vacation isn’t affected by your first option being sold out. On my trip we saw multiple humpback whales during a whale watching excursion, for example, but we didn’t see any orca. The day before, however, another group had seen a whole pod of orca on a different excursion. The weather in Alaska changes quickly and dramatically and can vary widely depending on where in the state you are.

The car that ran a shuttle into the one diner into town was broken down, and the shuttle from the lodge itself stopped at 2pm.. As we hadn't eaten at any of the lodges yet, rhe menus were fresh - to us. Some Alaskan "specialties" that were the same at all the lodges, and weren't all that special. To us, the connoisseur tour was absolutely NOT worth the extra money.

We have taken a 3-day land tour before the 7 day cruise. Years later we took the 8 day Connoisseur escorted tour before the 7 day cruise. It takes all the hassle out of the vacation so you can really relax and enjoy all the sights and knowledge you will get from the tour director.
Around 1130pm, had a little earthquake (4.7), which felt like a semi rolling by (we were on the 19th floor). The next am, we slept in, left our checked luggage in the room per instruction, and dropped our carry-ons at the bell desk. Lunch at the Sandwich Deck across the street, which was decent. There are no bathrooms @ the visitor center, so you have to go across the street to the Alaska Public Lands Information Center. Give yourself time, as you must go through a metal detector. After the 1 hour Trolley Tour (Which I recommend), we did a bit of shopping, then headed to the Info.
We are thinking of doing the Denali Explorer or Wildlife tour or something along those lines. There is a group of us who have been on an Alaska cruise but not the land portion. We are traveling with elderly parents and wondering if there is an elevator at either lodge. Alaska’s national parks are nothing short of impressive. Both tours were booked in to Princess hotels and used Princess transportation. Second (private tour) one included more meals at the lodges. The crab legs at the Denali Princess were outstanding! The filet mignon at the McKinley Princess was very tasty.
